We're at this stage in life where we reminisce too much of our near past, worry too much about our near future, are
too clueless about everything that can, will, may happen to us, think we know alot, think we don't know anything,
am confident about the wrong things, take pride in wasting time away, want too much but want to do too little.
Ohwell.

Mug
Saturday! :D
I know I just said "Fridays are emo days" yesterday but hey! Today's a brand new day! I really don't understand how people can get morning blues. I think people who're grumpy early in the morning are people who don't get enough sleep. So the whole world should sleep early. Lights out by 9pm and the world will be a happier place already. :D
Anyway, I was searching for articles for PW just now and guess what I found!

THE BIG STORY THIS WEEK
FORGET SKATEBOARDING. TRY EXTREME MUGGING, WHICH JESSICA LIM DISCOVERS IS REALLY A LIFESTYLE CHOICE
Mugging. One word that sums up school in Singapore as long as a hint of an exam is on the horizon.
But there is a group of students who take that to another level. At the ring of the school bell, these muggers sprint eagerly through the school gates and into their favourite haunts, where some extreme studying begins.
And they are picky: They frequent the McDonald’s at King Albert Park because there are “lots of seats available”, Coffee Bean at Republic Plaza even though the “tables are small” because “the food is good”, and the eateries in Siglap because it is “more classy”.
Once they hit their study spot of choice, muggers – armed with notes, textbooks, assessment books and pencil boxes full of highlighters – zoom in on the perfect table.
Finally, they make themselves at home (some even take off their canvas shoes), sit cross-legged on chairs and spread their notes all over the table.
But the mugging does not stop when these outlets shut. When the shutters come down for the day, they head back to their real homes to burn the midnight oil – fuelled by cans of Red Bull, music or snacks. Others may go to all-night joints like Hong Kong Cafe or eateries at Changi Airport.
Ask them anything in their textbooks and you are sure to get an answer.
But just what exactly is a mugger?
Said Nithiyasree Nadeson, 16: “A last minute ‘kiasu’ person who crams everything in their textbook into their head.”
The Secondary 4 student at Anderson Secondary School is a self-confessed mugger who “gets caught up with homework”, then buries herself in textbooks she has left till the last minute until she realises she “must get the exams over and done with”.
(WHO IS THAT SECONDARY FOUR STUDENT FROM ANDERSON SECONDARY!!!!!)
Muggers often hide in nooks and crannies to absorb information on the sly. Said Amy Phuah, 17: “Many students tell everyone else they are not mugging when they actually study furiously. They think that by telling their friends they are not studying, their friends will not study either.”
The student, who will start school at Temasek Polytechnic next month, mugged 12 hours daily for about a month before her O-level examinations.
Muggers are now so rampant that the 24-hour Starbucks outlet at Changi Airport put up a sign to restrict mugger patronage to between midnight and 5am. And McDonald’s staff there report that during the exam period, the number of muggers at their outlets doubles – from about five tables of students after midnight to about 10.
On the Internet are sites dedicated to mugging. “Chao Mugger”, an English Literature essay site, was created in 1996 for A-level students. It includes a compilation of essays gathered from students over the years.
And “Muggers United”, a blog started in 2005, has 78 members who log on to chat or share notes.
(WTF?! THIS IS SO EXAGGERRATED LAH!)
So why exactly do muggers mug?
Said counsellor Henry Lew: “The greatest motivation for these students is the fear of doing badly in their exams. This really pushes them to study so hard, for such long hours.”
Teachers say the phenomenon might not necessarily be a bad thing because “different people have different learning styles”. At least they are trying to do well,” said Mr Wee Gark Kung, 36, who teaches at Admiralty Secondary School.
Still, non-muggers say that the studying method is flawed.
Chris Wong, 16, a Sec 4 student at St Joseph’s Institution, pointed out: “I think learning is a process that should be consistent. It takes time to truly understand a formula, or to fully appreciate a book. Mugging means you forget everything after the exams. It ruins true learning.”
ADDITIONAL REPORTING BY ALFRED CHUA AND RAJESH MISIR
“It is rather hypocritical for students to tell you that they did not mug a lot for the exams but did so secretly behind your back. I'd say, don't listen or say a word; stay quiet and just mug."
– ANKITA SEN, 17, (RIGHT) First-year student at Anderson Junior College
!!!
I always thought "mug" is a word only people aged 14-19 use.
